Urgent Sign-On Letter to Stop the Environmental and Human Rights Abuses in the Niger Delta

4 January, 1999
Ogoni Day

To the CEO's of the oil companies operating in Nigeria:

We, the undersigned, are extremely concerned about the deployment of troops
in the Ijaw region of the Niger Delta which has left scores of people dead and countless others injured over the last week. The Ijaw are, like the Ogoni before them, demanding their rights to clean air, water, and land by exercising their right to peaceful protest and assembly. Oil operations, backed by the state security apparatus, have denied the Delta communities these rights.

We support the non-violent struggle of the Ijaw for the protection of their environment and the provision of basic human needs. We strongly condemn the deployment of troops in the Ijaw region resulting in torture, shooting and deaths of non-violent protesters. We believe that over 40 years of devastating environmental pollution and double standards by the oil companies are the principle causes for the tension. We believe that no responsible oil company can operate behind the terror of armed soldiers. We therefore ask the companies to cease their activities in the region until
all military and paramilitary units are removed, all activists released from prison, and the situation is peacefully resolved.

Signed,
